My man Brad came up with a fantastic idea for our latest Music Knights. We all came up with a bunch of songs from scenes we love in a movie and sent it to Brad. He put together a playlist, we got together and then guessed which song came from what movie. Besides some fantastic music we had not listened to in a while, it was an absolute blast. Classics from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, Rocky IV, Boogie Nights, hilarious tunes like Weird Science by Oingo Bongo (some of us are 80s kids) and tunes that just brought you back like The Cars’ Moving in Stereo. The top three for me were:
Head Over Heels – Tears for Fears – From Donnie Darko Hotel California (Spanish Mix) – Gipsy Kings – From The Big Lebowski New Slang – The Shins – From Garden State
Here is the playlist.
Most Valuable Knight – Brad…. killed…. it. We had been toying with a soundtracks idea but Brad came up with a fantastic way to incorporate movies. It really is awesome when someone in your group comes up with a great format, idea or just song. We have been doing this for a couple of years now and it is just getting better. Great stuff….
The Little Club is a small bar with a pool table, cheap drinks and a fantastic jukebox. It probably is the most expensive thing in the bar and it is awesome. The Little Club is a bit of an institution in our town and anytime we get a chance to go we do. The tunes kind of take over. It is the type of place where you put on a tune and someone at the end of the bar starts dancing, then the person playing pool starts grooving and pretty quickly the whole bar is groovin’. We covered a lot of ground, Stones, Meters, Zac Brown, San Diego punk, it was great. It reminded us just how awesome it is to find a bar with a group of friends and take over the jukebox and have a ball, we did and so should you. Here is the whole playlist.
Lost in the Supermarket – The Clash Hard to Handle – Black Crows Hold on Loosely – 38 Special
Check out the playlist here.
Most Valuable Knight - Bo was our man that night. He went deep with the San Diego punk AND he had the app for the jukebox on his phone. He paid for the songs and we got him drunk! THAT is what we call a win-win situation.
Every once in a while, the Knights go a bit crazy and the night we did was in one knight’s garage. We affectionately call it Brad’s Bar, it is Brad’s garage that has a bar, TV and a whole lot of awesomeness. We threw on Roadhouse in the background and this playlist on. We paused the music at key moments, like “Thought you’d be bigger….”. It was an absolute blast and we ended up with a fantastic playlist of what we called “Jukebox” or “Dive Bar” tunes. Absolutely love this one, here are our favorites:
Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man – Bob Segar Midnight Rambler – The Rolling Stones Hoochie Coochie Man – The Jeff Healey Band
You can check out the playlist here. Let us know what you think.
Most Valuable Knight – Have to give this one to Sean. Sean is our American rock and roll knight and always shows up with music that makes everyone move. He chose Midnight Rambler and it was a huge highlight of the night.
Earlier this year I celebrated my birthday with a fellow Pisces and as our music theme we asked everyone to send over three songs before the party. The first was one of your favorite tunes from before high school, the second was a tune from your senior year you loved and finally a tune that makes you MOVE! This is a great format to get to know the other people there. Everyone is trying to guess whose song is whose and there was a bunch of overlap. We even had everyone vote for the favorite song in each category and it was a blast! Here were our winners:
Electric Avenue – Eddie Grant Poison – Bell Biv DeVoe Groove is in the Heart – Deee-Lite
You can check out the playlist here. Let us know what you think.
Most Valuable Knight – David – David unbelievably chose Electric Avenue AND Groove is in the Heart. One of his fellow knights chose Groove as well but sweet baby Jesus! Two of three is damn good. Love ya David!
A great way of spending an evening with your crew is putting together a video playlist. Find somewhere where you can watch the playlist on YouTube and have a ball. Our theme was live music, so each of us chose a video clip that was live music, and it was awesome. Almost all the videos were new to me, I knew most of the musicians but hadn’t heard/seen the tunes. A bunch of them were covers but almost all of them were in some way special. Like my favorite of the night was when Prince, Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne and others covered George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” at the 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. My buddy Brad brought this gem, and it is spectacular.
While My Guitar Gently Weeps - Prince, Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne and others – 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction The Chain – Florence and the Machine – Glastonbury Festival 2010 Baby Please Don’t Go – Muddy Water & The Rolling Stones
You can check out the videos here. Let us know what you think
Most Valuable Knight – Brad – This could have gone two ways, Sean brought the consensus favorite (Stones & Muddy), but Brad brought Prince’s unbelievable solo…. So sue me!
One of the best knights we have had was when we all came with our favorite covers. Some of us came with five, some of us came with 25, it was awesome. There are so many good covers out there and that night I heard so many covers I had never heard before. We also made a playlist that night which made that night exceptional because I could listen to the songs again and again. Yes, it took a little bit of effort to remember the order, write down the songs in order and then put together a playlist the next day. One of the best things about the playlist was the variety. We had covers from Waylon Jennings, Metallica, Sublime and Phish to name just a few. It was awesome and by the end of the night we were all singing along and a few of us getting down. Great, great stuff. Here were some of the favorites:
Take Me Home, Country Roads - Toots & The Maytals Touch of Grey - War on Drugs The Man Who Sold The World - Nirvana
You can check out the playlist here. Let us know what you think
Most Valuable Knight - Adrian - Adrian is a fantastic member to have, he always shows up with awesome music and a lot of it. He was the one who brought 25 covers and Touch of Grey was his. Adrian loves him some WOD, and who wouldn't!
